Veterinary Oncology
At Sentinel Veterinary Specialists & Emergency, we adhere to the highest standards of care and ethics, and we're fully committed to advancing the field of veterinary oncology in our region.
Our comprehensive oncology services include consultations, diagnostics, and cutting-edge treatment options for cats and dogs diagnosed with all types of cancer.
World-Class Expertise
Cancer treatment for pets is a highly specialized discipline, and we're extremely fortunate to have one of the only board-certified veterinary oncologists in the state of Montana on our staff. Board-certified specialists have to complete extensive training, including several years in a formal residency program. This level of expertise gives you and your pets access to the best clinical knowledge and cancer treatments available.
Treatment Options
As in human medicine, advancements are always being made in veterinary oncology. Our goal is to provide the most effective treatment protocol suitable for your pet's specific type of cancer and its biological behavior while also being mindful of your pet's quality of life. We make it a priority to understand the wishes of the owner, and we'll help you choose an appropriate treatment path, which sometimes includes palliative (comfort) care.

Consultations
We provide consultations (by appointment only) for owners with pets that have been diagnosed with cancer or if cancer is suspected. And we always consult with the referring primary care physician via email or telephone.
Our owner consultations include the following:
- We'll review your pet's history and medical record as supplied by the referring veterinarian, and we’ll perform our own physical examination.
- We'll evaluate whether or not further diagnostic tests are needed to define the diagnosis and determine if the cancer has spread (metastasized).
- We'll discuss your pet’s treatment options, which could include surgery, chemotherapy, electrochemotherapy, radiation therapy referral, immunotherapy, symptomatic treatment, or a combination of two or more modalities.
- We'll explain possible side effects and expected effectiveness of each treatment option.
- We'll determine an appropriate chemotherapy protocol or symptomatic treatment schedule.
- We'll fully explain how our treatments are administered and ways in which we monitor each patient during and after the conclusion of cancer treatment.
